Building the Ultimate Off-Road Toyota 4Runner with Rough Country

Building the Ultimate Off-Road Toyota 4Runner with Rough Country

Over the years, Rough Country has helped Toyota owners transform their 4Runners into ultimate off-road and overlanding machines. This time, we decided to take on the challenge ourselves by building a 2019 4Runner TRD Off-Road right in our shop. The goal? To show just how much better an already-capable vehicle can get with the Rough Country touch.

Starting with a Solid Foundation

The Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road is already a beast straight off the lot, but we're here to take it to the next level. Our plan is simple: increase its ground clearance, add trail-ready accessories, and make it look even more rugged and refined. From a better stance to improved performance, this build will showcase the best Rough Country offers.

Boosting Ground Clearance with a 3-inch Lift

The first step in transforming our 4Runner was to install a 3-inch lift kit. This upgrade includes:

  • Upper control arms
  • Lifted front struts
  • Replacement rear shocks
  • Rear lift coils

We chose Rough Country’s M1 monotube shocks and struts, known for their smooth ride and durability. The front struts are fully height-adjustable, making it easy to dial in the perfect stance.

Perfect Wheels and Tires

Wheels and tires can make or break any build. Using Rough Country’s Wheel and Tire Wizard, we found the ideal setup for this rig. After entering the 4Runner’s details, we chose:

  • Rough Country Series 90 wheels in bronze (18x9 with a -12mm offset)
  • Rough Country Mud Terrain tires (285/65R18)

This combination strikes the perfect balance: quiet and smooth on the road, with excellent traction and easy clean-out off-road. Plus, the sidewall is large enough to allow for airing down when extra grip is needed.

Adding Recovery Gear and Accessories

No off-road build is complete without the right recovery gear. For this 4Runner, we added:

  • A front winch bumper paired with a winch for pulling power
  • Extra lighting with controllers to illuminate the trail
  • Nerf steps for easier access to the cab

And yes, we’ve got a few surprises in store as we progress with the build.
